Advancing Dental Interoperability at National Convening in Washington, D.C.

Event participation underscores commitment to open data, industry collaboration, and practical solutions that empower dental practices, improve patient care, and reduce systemic inefficiencies
Vyne Dental®, a leading provider of dental revenue technologies and health information exchange solutions, participated in the “Enhancing Interoperability in Dental Services” convening, a half-day event hosted by Leavitt Partners and the Dental Standards Institute (DSI) on June 25 in Washington, D.C. This high-level meeting brought together providers, technology vendors, policymakers, and patient advocates to address long-standing challenges in dental data interoperability.
As a vocal advocate for open data and seamless data exchange, Vyne Dental is taking a prominent role in the movement to modernize dental health information technology systems and promote improved care through interoperability. Vyne Dental Chief Executive Officer Steve Roberts, Chief Product Officer Paul Bernard, Chief Revenue Officer Nick Rodich and consultant Bryan Laskin, DDS, a nationally recognized leader in dental technology, attended the convening along with other industry stakeholders.
A Call for Industry Unity
Vyne Dental is leading efforts to expand the use of open data standards and is collaborating with widely used practice management systems, including Patterson Eaglesoft and Open Dental. Through these partnerships, Vyne Dental enables practices to avoid being locked into a single vendor, streamline administrative workflows, and gain timely access to critical patient data. These capabilities allow clinicians and patients to participate more actively in the care experience.
“Our objective is clear: to make dental data as accessible, secure, and portable as it is in the broader healthcare system,” said Roberts. “With the adoption of open standards, practices can view complete treatment histories, improve claims submission, minimize administrative workload, and provide patients with greater transparency and control over their care.”
The Importance of Interoperability
The convening on June 25 was especially relevant in light of regulatory and policy changes that now allow Medicare reimbursement for medically necessary dental procedures. In addition, the 21st Century Cures Act, the federal legislation aimed at improving healthcare innovation and transparency, applies fully to dental providers. The law prohibits “information blocking” and mandates that all healthcare providers, including dentists, give patients timely and secure access to their electronic health records.
Despite this mandate, compliance within the dental industry remains limited, in part due to a lack of awareness and insufficient enforcement. This lack of interoperability contributes to fragmented care delivery and increases the risk of fraud, waste, and abuse within the healthcare system.
Vyne Dental is working to change this by educating practices and offering solutions that help them meet federal requirements while improving care delivery, operational efficiency, and patient engagement. These open data solutions enable the seamless transfer of records between systems, enhancing diagnostic accuracy, and improving collaboration between dental and medical professionals.
For example, as part of its commitment to these goals, Vyne Dental is:
- Promoting adherence to open data exchange standards such as Form Standard 1111 and DSI’s THOR (EEDRA) specification
- Offering dental practices the ability to not be reliant on a single clearinghouse connection
- Educating providers about federal requirements under HIPAA and the 21st Century Cures Act
- Facilitating integration of new technologies such as artificial intelligence and advanced analytics without imposing costly development requirements
“The dental industry already has the standards needed to achieve interoperability,” added Roberts. “The remaining barriers are cultural and structural. By aligning stakeholders around open data, we can ensure better patient outcomes, strengthen practice operations, and foster meaningful innovation throughout the dental ecosystem.”
