Interoperability and Customer Choice: Context and Clarification
Recent communications from Dentrix and Henry Schein One have characterized their latest platform changes as security-driven. While the importance of protecting patient data and maintaining system integrity is widely recognized, additional context is necessary to fully understand the implications for interoperability and customer choice.
Interoperability Approach
Vyne Dental maintains integration partnerships with multiple practice management systems, including Open Dental and Patterson (Eaglesoft). These integrations are supported through paid API access, enabling structured and reliable data exchange.
These partnerships reflect a consistent approach: when APIs provide the necessary data and functionality, we support and participate in those ecosystems. At the same time, Vyne Dental supports multiple integration methods to allow flexibility in how practices manage workflows.
Engagement with the Dentrix API Exchange
Since March 2025, Vyne Dental has actively engaged with Henry Schein One in an effort to join its developer program and API ecosystem. However, the API Exchange has several limitations that have made it unfeasible for Vyne Dental to join the program.
Current limitations of the Dentrix API Exchange include:
- The absence of required data elements to support claims submission workflows
- Program requirements that would require discontinuing existing integration methods for claims submission
As a result, participation in the API Exchange would not provide the necessary information to submit claims, and would force Vyne to discontinue its claim submission services for Dentrix customers entirely.
Vyne Dental has also offered to invest financially to support the development of additional APIs needed to enable full functionality within the ecosystem.
Considerations for Practices
Interoperability decisions have direct operational impacts on dental practices. Key considerations include:
- Maintaining control over how your practice data is accessed and used
- Preserving the ability to choose among different vendors and workflow configurations
- Ensuring that integration pathways support, rather than limit, existing and evolving operational needs
While the Dentrix API Exchange is presented as a primary integration pathway, current functional gaps may affect practices that rely on established solutions.
Ongoing Position
Vyne Dental continues to support secure data exchange and remains open to collaboration with industry partners, including Henry Schein One.
Effective interoperability depends on the availability of complete and functional APIs, along with implementation models that allow practices to retain flexibility in how they operate.
In the interim, Vyne Dental will continue to support existing integrations and advocate for solutions that align with the operational needs of the providers it serves.
